A funeral service for Officer Craig Herbert began at 10 a.m. in Calvary Temple of Indianapolis, 2901 N. Post Road.

At about noon, a procession involving hundreds of law enforcement officers from around the state left the church and went north into Lawrence, where a hearse carrying Herbert's casket paused in front of Lawrence's police station. During the pause, a dispatcher marked him 10-42 -- police parlance for out of service -- over a law enforcement radio frequency.

The procession went to Grove Lawn Cemetery in Pendleton, where Herbert was laid to rest.

Herbert, 34, was the Lawrence Police Department's first officer to die in the line of duty. Police said a stolen van driven by a 15-year-old boy broad-sided Herbert's patrol car late Saturday, killing Herbert.

The van was being chased by a different officer, and Herbert had been trying to determine the minivan's location when the crash happened, police said.

The boy faces charges that include reckless homicide. A passenger in the van, also a 15-year-old boy, was charged with auto theft.

Visitation was held at the church Thursday. Indianapolis and Marion County sheriff's officers patrolled Lawrence streets so that Lawrence officers could attend.

Officer's Cousin: Family Devastated

Also Thursday, one of Herbert's cousins spoke to reporters at the Lawrence Police Department to thank the community for its support.

The cousin, Mark Herbert, said the crash has changed the family.

"The devastation has changed us all," Mark Herbert said. "Our life will never be the same without him."

Craig Herbert is survived by a wife and two sons.

A trust fund has been established for the boys. Donations can be made to the Children of Patrolman Herbert fund at the Indiana Members Credit Union.

The Lawrence Police Department is selling vehicle decals honoring Herbert. Proceeds from the decals, which are being sold for $5 at the department and the Lawrence city government building, will go to the trust fund.
