INDIANAPOLIS -- Hundreds of registered sex offenders in Marion County have failed to regularly update their address information as required by law, and some may have lied about their whereabouts, RTV6's Jack Rinehart reported Monday.
Indianapolis police, who maintain the local sex offender registry, say that nearly 500 of 1,672 registrants have ignored notices to update their registrations.
A check conducted by RTV6 showed some entries on the registry to be inaccurate. Out of 10 entries examined, only three could be verified. One offender had listed the address of a vacant lot, Rinehart reported.Members of the Indianapolis Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff's Department planed to meet about concerns over the list this week. They hope to find ways to improve the list's accuracy.Law requires sex offenders to notify authorities of changes in address, employment status and education."What good does it (do to have it) on the books if we don’t have some bite on it to enforce that -- (to make) them do the registration?" Indianapolis police Capt. Don Bee said. Not many people currently are assigned to the list's verification. The sheriff's department has two reserve deputies who spend 10 hours a week trying to keep tabs on the registered offenders, Rinehart reported.
