Police: Man Disappeared After Jumping Into Eagle Creek Reservoir

UPDATED: 8:07 am EDT June 6, 2005

A search for a man who police believe drowned in Eagle Creek Reservoir continues Monday after being suspended Sunday afternoon, nearly 24 hours after he was last seen.

Police said Thomas Thompson, 37, disappeared after jumping from a metal fishing boat into the water at about 7 p.m. Saturday.

Also on the boat were James Desper, 46, and a 9-year-old boy. After rescue personnel were contacted, Desper was arrested on an outstanding warrant charging him with driving under the influence of alcohol, RTV6 reported.

Police and fire department divers searched the reservoir for a few hours Saturday night and resumed the search on Sunday. The divers suspended the effort Sunday afternoon because of an approaching storm.

Gregg Arkins, of the Indianapolis Police Department dive team, said confusion at the reservoir Saturday night hindered the search.

"The hardest part of this whole operation has been we don't have someone who can point to a location and say, 'That's where I saw him go down,' " Arkins said. "We're dealing in generalities."
