Three Counties Tackle Colts Stadium Funding Issue

Elected officials in four central Indiana counties will vote this week on a proposal to increase taxes to help pay for the new Colts stadium and expanded convention center.County councils in Marion, Johnson and Morgan counties have votes scheduled Monday night. Boone County follows Tuesday.So far, Hancock County is the only one of seven counties neighboring Indianapolis which have agreed to approve the food and beverage tax to help fund the $900 million plan for a new Colts stadium and an expanded Indiana Convention Center.Officials face a July 1 deadline to sign a lease with the Colts, secure tax increases to pay for the project and begin borrowing money for construction.Groundbreaking is scheduled for August, and the facility must open for the 2008 season.
