Colts Stadium Funding Clears Hurdle

The funding package for the new Colts stadium and expanded convention center has cleared what is probably its biggest hurdle.

Monday night, three counties considered the tax.

In Indianapolis, the City-County Council voted overwhelmingly for the four tax package that will provide most of the funding.

The vote doubled the food and beverage tax to 2 percent and increased the hotel-motel tax, the auto rental tax and the admissions tax.

Together these taxes are estimated to bring in more than $30 million a year, dwarfing what the seven doughnut counties are supposed to contribute through their restaurant taxes.

Some spoke out against the increases, saying city leaders don't have their priorities straight, especially with police layoffs in the works.

"Now, tonight you will be voting on using those taxes for a private, entertainment project. Clearly, we think public safety issues are more important than the proposed plan," Vince Huber said.

The Johnson County council voted 6-1 in favor of the 1 percent tax for their area. But, because the vote was not unanimous, the tax will have to be voted on again. That happens June 22.

In Morgan County, the council delayed its second reading on the new tax, saying they need more answers. They've scheduled another hearing for June 27.

Boone County commissioners will discuss the issue Tuesday night.
