Another County Approves Colts Stadium Tax

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. -- Another Indiana county tackled the Colts stadium tax package Tuesday night and another will vote again on the tax increase tonight.
Shelby County was the latest to vote on that proposed 1 percent food and beverage tax increase, which would help pay for a new Colts stadium and convention center.Dozens of Shelby County residents and business owners packed the small room at the courthouse annex to voice both support and opposition to a tax increase.The seven-member council voted unanimously for the tax increase.Shelby County is expected to contribute about $225,000 a year toward the stadium project."I'm losing about $84,000 a year with this tax. That's coming out of my customers pockets. That's the impact it will have on us," Indiana Downs general manager John Schuster said.Hancock, Boone, Marion, and Shelby Counties have passed the tax.Johnson County votes again tonight. They voted 6-1 in favor of the tax last time, but because the vote wasn't unanimous, they have to vote again.Hamilton, Morgan and Hendricks counties are all scheduled to vote on the measure Monday.
