Nudity In Seniors' Calendar To Be Illusion Only

POSTED: 9:14 pm EDT July 8, 2005

Female seniors who had said they would pose nude for a fundraising calendar are backing away from the nudity portion of the plan.

Instead, the calendar -- meant to raise money to oppose the planned demolition of Randolph County's courthouse -- will portray an illusion of nudity.

Seven female senior citizens are posing for a calendar, the proceeds of which will go to a group that is fighting plans to demolish Randolph County's 130-year-old courthouse.

The group, consisting of seven women ranging in age from 77 to 94, isn't explaining what that means.

"You just wait and see. Buy a calendar," one of the women, Wanda Grove, told RTV6's Derrik Thomas on Friday.

The project's photographer, Mary Ellen Bartram, said the calendar's pictures would be tasteful.

"Obviously they have their dignity and I have my reputation. Consequently, they are very tasteful pictures," Bartram said.

Proceeds from the calendar, which will be sold later this month for $12.95 each, will go to the Save the Courthouse Fund. County commissioners voted on June 6 to demolish the 130-year-old courthouse in Winchester and replace it with a new structure.

The calendar is the brainchild of Farmland resident Larry Francer, a vocal opponent of the demolition who helped organize a petition drive that collected more than 4,000 signatures asking the commissioners to reconsider.

The calendar's models are members of a card club in Farmland, located in western Randolph County.

The women were clothed during a photo session for the project Friday in front of the courthouse. Initially, the group said the women would pose nude, with strategically placed miniature replicas of the courthouse in front of them.
