INDIANAPOLIS -- Two people were killed and three others were injured in an accident police said was caused by a drunken driver. The dead and injured were occupants in a Mercedes SUV leaving a wedding reception at the Indianapolis Zoo early Sunday morning.Rosalio Pedraza, 31, was believed to have caused the accident, police said.
Witnesses told police the Mercedes had the right-of-way as it approached a green light at an intersection. As the driver turned onto Washington Street, the Mercedes was broadsided by a Ford Bronco, driven by Pedraza.Police said Pedraza's blood-alcohol measured three times the legal limit on a portable breath test."Here we have an incident where a couple was celebrating a special moment in their lives," Indianapolis police Lt. Lloyd Crowe said. "Now, from this point forward, it's going to be marred by this tragedy."The victims were both ejected from the Mercedes. One of them was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The other died later at Wishard Hospital. The victims were identified as Thomas Youngstafel, 45, and Joseph Gehler, 30, both from Kentucky.Cincinnati television station WLWT reported that Youngstafel was the groom's father. The groom's mother was one of the three injured.Police said this was not the first time Pedraza had been arrested for driving drunk."Because of the way the justice system works, and doesn't work sometimes, these people do get back behind the wheel of a car and drive again, and cause accidents again," Crowe said.Pedraza was also injured in the crash. He remained at Wishard Hospital Sunday evening. He's been charged with two counts reckless homicide and two counts of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
