INDIANAPOLIS -- The wrecking ball started swinging Monday morning even though there's still no formal lease agreement between Indianapolis and the Colts.

Faced with a tight construction schedule to get the new Colts stadium ready for the 2008 season, demolition crews began knocking down the Big Blue Auto Parts warehouse what occupies part of the stadium site.
City officials said they are close to an agreement with the Colts on a lease, but can't assure they will have one by the self-imposed deadline of Aug. 31.Because the state stadium authority, which is paying for the stadium, hasn't been able to issue bonds yet, there technically isn't any money to pay for the demolition. The city's capital improvement board is advancing the cash.Indianapolis estimates it has advanced the state as much as $10 million so far to cover not only demolition, but also design work for the new stadium.
