INDIANAPOLIS -- Beginning Wednesday, Powerball lottery players have a chance at winning more money, though the odds of getting the jackpot will be tougher.Powerball officials changed the game in an effort to make it more competitive with other games, especially rival Mega Millions. They hope larger jackpots will attract more players. The base Powerball jackpot has been increased from $10 million to $15 million. It will now jump by at least $5 million for every drawing until there is a winner. But with the larger starting jackpot comes longer odds. The range of numbers to choose is now 1-55 -- an increase of two. That moves the odds of winning the jackpot from 1 in 120.5 million to 1 in 146.1 milion.Players who match five numbers will get $200,000 instead of $100,000. People who purchase the Powerplay multiplier could win up to $1 million, even if they don't match the Powerball. The prize for matching four numbers will increase from $5,000 to $10,000.Over the past several years, Hoosiers have crossed the border to play games from other states. Lottery officials are hoping this change will keep more Hoosiers playing the lottery in their own state.
