Arrest Made In Restaurant Owner's Killing

POSTED: 10:26 pm EST October 31, 2005

Police on Monday arrested a man suspected of killing a restaurant owner in a shooting that drew comment from the state's governor and the city's mayor last week.

Edrick Williams, 23, was arrested in connection with the death of Clarence Williams Jr., the owner of C-Daddy's Barbeque on the city's west side. The two men were not related.

Authorities said Clarence Williams, 43, was robbed and shot multiple times inside the restaurant Wednesday evening. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Clarence Williams' death caught the attention of Gov. Mitch Daniels, who met the restaurant owner while campaigning for governor in 2004. Daniels told reporters last week that he has saddened by the killing and that Williams was an anchor for his neighborhood.

Clarence Williams met Gov. Mitch Daniels on the campaign trail in 2004.

In a press release on Monday night, Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson said, "our hearts are still heavy from the loss of a fine man in our community."

"Nevertheless, through the outstanding effort of our police department, our city is a little safer tonight because of the arrest of a serious violent felon," Peterson said.

Police said Edrick Williams faces charges of murder and robbery in connection with Clarence Williams' death. He also faces murder charges in Birmingham, Ala., police said.
