Dungy Family Mourns After Son's Unexpected Death

LUTZ, Fla. -- Tragedy has struck the family of Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy.Dungy's son James, 18, was found dead in an apartment near Tampa Bay, Fla., Thursday morning.Police said indications are that Dungy killed himself, but a final determination will not be made until an autopsy is completed.
Police said James Dungy's girlfriend called them at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. James Dungy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.James Dungy was a 2005 graduate of North Central High School in Indianapolis and was attending college at the University of South Florida, RTV6's Wil Hampton reported.North Central principal C.E. Quandt said James Dungy was a personable student who never flaunted his father's position."He just came in and tried to blend in and be a student," Quandt said. "I liked James a lot."James and his younger brother, Eric, sometimes watched Colts games from the sidelines, but they had to earn it by doing well in school.There may have been some indication of problems. WFTS-TV in Tampa reported that the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department told them they had responded to a call at James Dungy's apartment on a report of a drug overdose involving the teen about two months ago. Further information about that incident was not available.Tony Dungy left the team early Thursday to be with his family in the Tampa area.Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian addressed the media late Thursday morning."This is a tragedy for the Dungy family and, by extension, for his football family of the Colts," Polian said. "Tony made it clear to both myself and to Jim that he wished for the organization to carry on and we will. We have the best role model in the world with Tony Dungy."Assistant coach Jim Caldwell will take over for Dungy until the Colts coach returns to the team. Polian said Dungy will have all the time that he needs.The news was shared with the team Thursday morning in a meeting Polian described as somber. The Colts have made a chaplain available to anyone in the organization.Polian said the team would conduct business as usual, per Dungy's wishes.Dungy and his wife, Lauren, have four other children.The Indianapolis Colts are 13-1 and have a game in Seattle Saturday.Fans Asked To Keep Dungy Family In PrayersTony Dungy is such a well-liked figure in Indianapolis.
