Freight-Train Derailment Investigated

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. -- Seven cars of a 85-car cargo train derailed in Alexandria Saturday night, prompting an evacuation of nearby homes until officials determined that no hazardous materials had leaked.The Norfolk Southern train derailed just west of downtown Alexandria just after 7 p.m., RTV6's Jeremy Brilliant reported. Authorities evacuated 50 to 75 people from their homes because a belief that one car held a hazardous material, sodium chlorate.An examination revealed that the car did have some residue of the material, but it was otherwise empty and it had no leak, officials said. After the examination, evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes.

No injuries were reported.Investigators were trying to determine why the derailment happened. Officials expected the derailment scene to be cleared by Sunday morning.
