Sex Offender Registry Can Be Checked By Phone

State To Provide E-Mail Alerts Soon

POSTED: 9:33 pm EST February 13, 2006

The Marion County prosecutor's office is allowing people to check the state's sex offender registry by telephone.

By calling (317) 327-5437, a person can find out how many sex offenders live near his or her residence. The program began accepting calls on Monday.

The registry already was accessible at www.insor.org.

Also Monday, Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter touted an e-mail service through which people will be able learn when a sex offender moves into a neighborhood.

That service is set to debut in April.

"Anytime there is a change in the database of the sex offender registry, an immediate e-mail notice will go out to those people that have signed up," Carter said.

People convicted of sex offenses are required by law to register their residence and work information with the state. That information is put into the registry.
