An Indianapolis police officer faces felony forgery charges following an arrest at a CVS Pharmacy on Indianapolis' south side Monday.

Officer Mark Kuykendall, an 8-year veteran of the force and north district patrolman, is accused of changing a prescription, 6News' Ericka Flye reported.

6News was at the CVS when Marion County sheriff's deputies made the arrest. Kuykendall was led out of the back door of the pharmacy, with a jacket covering his head.

"Something with the writing on the prescription caught the pharmacist's attention," said Indianapolis police Lt. Lloyd Crowe.

IPD officials said Kuykendall had a valid doctor's prescription for Valium, but pharmacists believe the prescription had been altered, changing the number of pills to be dispensed to a higher number.

IPD officials said Kuykendall had recently had surgery on both knees and both shoulders. He had also had a tumor removed from his foot.

The officer has been off-duty because of the surgery. If forgery allegations are proven, he will not return to the force.

"We do know that he was dealing with some pain issues. It does not … make this allegation OK of course, but an investigation will be done," Crowe said.

Valium is considered highly addictive. It is commonly used to treat anxiety and insomnia.

The Marion County Sheriff's Department is conducting the criminal investigation. There is also an internal investigation being conducted by IPD.
