An 8-year-old girl drown after falling into a pond at an apartment complex on Indianapolis' west side Saturday night.

Rescue crews were called to the Bayhead Apartments at 38th Street and Bayhead Drive just after 7 p.m.

Witnesses said the girl was trying to retrieve something from the water when she slipped, fell in and did not resurface.

"There were witnesses on the scene that did try to assist, but without knowing her exactly location, that made it very difficult for individuals in the apartment complex trying to help with the rescue," Mike Pruitt with the Wayne Township Fire Department.

Divers searched the pond for an hour before finding the girl's body in 10 feet of water.

She was taken to Riley Hospital for Children, where she was pronounced dead.

"I was just praying that the child wasn't in the lake," neighbor Danielle Flores said. "They need to put a fence around these lakes. There are too many little kids, and it don't take more than a second for something to happen like this."

The girl's name was not immediately released.
