Daylight-Saving Time Begins Sunday

POSTED: 9:39 am EST March 21, 2006

6News and TheIndyChannel.com want you to be prepared for Indiana's shift to daylight-saving time April 2.

On April 2, Indiana will join the rest of the country in observing daylight-saving time. Most of the state will be in the Eastern Time Zone, but some counties in the northwestern and southwestern parts of the state will be in the Central Time Zone.

Both time zones will begin observing daylight-saving time, meaning clocks will need to be moved forward by an hour on April 2.

To ensure that you are observing the correct time on April 2, change your clocks before you go to bed on April 1.

Computers will also need to be adjusted to new time settings. For computers using Windows, users in the Eastern Time Zone will need to change their Date and Time Properties settings from Indiana Time to Eastern Time. To do this, do the following:

  • Double-click the time display in the lower right-hand side of your computer screen.
  • Click the Time Zone tab in the box that pops up.
  • Change the drop-down box to (GMT-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada)
  • Check the box that says "Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes".
  • Click "OK" at the bottom of the box.
  • After making those changes, you should be all set! Other Windows programs, including Microsoft Outlook, should recognize the new time settings.

This change can and should be made in advance of the April 2 switch if you are in the Eastern Time Zone, since most of Indiana is currently in sync with Eastern Time.

More detailed instructions for computer changes is available directly from Microsoft.
