Indiana Cleans Up After Storms

More Than 400 Homes Damaged Sunday

POSTED: 8:06 pm EDT April 3, 2006

Many Indiana residents spent Monday cleaning up a day after severe storms damaged several businesses and homes across the state.

In Mitchell, about 75 miles southwest of Indianapolis, a team from the National Weather Service tried to determine whether storm damage there was done by a tornado.

The roof of the C&M conveyor belt company in Mitchell collapsed onto machinery below during Sunday's storms. No one was injured. Employees worried about their jobs on Monday, 6News' Ben Morriston reported.

"The roof was torn down pretty much on both sides. It's got a lot of it sitting inside on our machinery," Mitchell resident Danny Payton said. "We don't know if (the roof) has damaged (the machinery) yet."

Duke Energy Corp. said about 1,500 to 1,600 customers in Mitchell were without power Monday afternoon.

In Seymour, where two homes were destroyed and several others were damaged, residents spent much of Monday carting away debris, Morriston reported.

Across Indiana, storms on Sunday destroyed one business, damaged 49 business sites, destroyed 19 homes and damaged more than 400 homes, according to the state Department of Homeland Security.

Emergency officials were checking out as many as eight suspected tornadoes in the state. No serious injuries were reported in Indiana, but the storm wave was blamed for as many as 27 deaths across eight states.

A Sunday storm did damage in many parts of Indianapolis, including at the downtown Indiana Square skyscraper, where several windows were shattered. A representative for the building's owner said the structure would be closed for at least a week as forensic engineers determine whether the building is structurally safe.

Sunday's storms came two nights after a different round of storms caused extensive damage in parts of Johnson and Shelby counties.
