Girl Mauled By Dog Undergoes Second Surgery
Surgeons Positive About 2-Year-Old's Progress, Spokesman Says

INDIANAPOLIS -- A girl who was mauled by a pit bull 10 days ago was recovering from her second surgery Monday, a hospital spokesman said.Amaya Hess was in surgery for seven hours at Riley Hospital for Children. She was in critical condition following the operation, and she will require more surgeries, but her surgeons were positive about her progress, the spokesman said.Police said a pit bull attacked the girl in the front yard of a home in the 1300 block of South Belmont Avenue on May 26. Hess and her mother were there to visit one of the mother's friends.The dog escaped from the house through an open front door, ran to the girl and plucked her from a stroller by her head, police said.Hess was hospitalized with damaged eyes, other head injuries and a collapsed lung. Animal control officers confiscated the dog, which was later euthanized.
