INDIANAPOLIS -- A group opposed to a proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Indiana is getting ready to roll out yard signs, door hangers and billboards to get its message out.National and local churches are spending $65,000 in the campaign, which asks the question, would Jesus discriminate?About 2,000 yard signs are being placed in strategic locations in Indianapolis, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported. Eleven billboards will begin going up this week.
"Not only will we be treating gay people unequally as marriage partners, but we will be preventing them from visiting partners in the hospital unless they have a special piece of paper with them," said the Rev. Jeff Miner of Jesus Metropolitan Community Church.Miner is the pastor of the predominantly gay church, which is located just off East 56th Street. He and his partner David Zier have been together for 15 years.Republican Rep. Woody Burton, one of the sponsors of the legislation, said the amendment is what Hoosiers want."This country was founded on the principles of one man being married to one woman. It's the proper thing to do," Burton said. "Even if you look at it from nature's standpoint, in order to reproduce, it takes a man and a woman."Miner wrote a book, entitled "The Children Are Free," in which he claims to provide biblical evidence supporting same-sex relationships.Same-sex marriage will be the topic at Miner's church on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
