A man received five puncture wounds on his hand and three on his leg when two pit bulls attacked him Thursday morning.

A man is recovering after he was attacked by two pit bulls as he walked to work on Indianapolis' south side on Thursday morning.

Mike McGraw, 34, was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where his hand and leg were bandaged following the incident.

The dogs were caught and were taken to Animal Care and Control. Officials are working to determine who owns the animals, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

The dogs tore into McGraw's hand, leaving him with five puncture wounds. They also pierced the skin on McGraw's leg in three spots.

The incident happened early Thursday morning near Rural and Murray streets as McGraw walked to the home of his boss to go to work.

"They came running and I didn't think they were running at me," McGraw said. "I just kept on walking and the white one got my leg."

McGraw said when he went after the white dog to push it off his leg, the other dog went for his hand.

McGraw told 6News he got some help from a woman driving by and used a cell phone to call his boss for help.

"They honked the horn and I jumped on the hood of the car. If she wouldn't have come by, I wouldn't have got free," McGraw said.

The pit bulls, one male and one female, circled the woman's car until police and Animal Care and Control came out to corral them. Officials said the attack was unprovoked.

"It's very important to note that this was an in-season female and an intact male," said Media Wilson of Animal Care and Control. "Spaying and neutering your pets cuts down the risk of an attack significantly."

Neighbors told 6News numerous dogs run loose in the southside neighborhood where the attack occurred -- so many that the area is known as "Dog Patch."

McGraw went door-to-door in the neighborhood Thursday, hoping to find the dogs' owner. The owners could face charges.

The latest attack came the day after a public forum was held to discuss a dangerous dog ordinance for Indianapolis.
