Mark Dodson was one of the people who called 911 after hearing shots at 560 N. Hamilton Ave. "After (police) got there and you still don't see no ambulances or nothing, you're starting to figure out there's something bad," Dodson said.

Police Release 911 Calls Relating To Slayings Of 7

POSTED: 5:55 pm EDT June 21, 2006

Fear, confusion and pleas for help can be heard on recordings of 911 calls that neighbors made as seven people were killed in an Indianapolis house on June 1.

Police released some of the recordings Wednesday. Neighbors reported hearing several shots at 560 N. Hamilton Ave., where police say three boys and four adults were killed during a robbery.

Released 911 Calls: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

One of the callers, Frank Dodson, lives across the street from the home. He said a woman who had been with one of the eventual victims moments earlier ran to his house after the shooting started.

In the background of Dodson's 911 call, the woman can be heard crying.

"I don't know what she's saying. She said somebody named Flora got shot," Dodson told a 911 dispatcher.

The woman was referring to Flora Albarran, 21, one of the seven who were later found dead. The woman had driven to the neighborhood with Albarran as the robbery was happening, but she didn't enter the house with her.

On Wednesday, Dodson talked to 6News' Linda Allen about the shootings.

"After (police) got there and you still don't see no ambulances or nothing, you're starting to figure out there's something bad," Dodson said.

One of the other 911 callers, Dennis Long, told 6News he was on his front porch on nearby Jefferson Avenue when he heard gunfire.

Long said he is used to hearing gunfire in the neighborhood, and he didn't imagine on the night of June 1 that seven people were being killed.

"I did not think (anyone) got murdered," Long said Wednesday.

Desmond Turner, 28, and James Stewart, 30, were arrested within 48 hours of the shootings. They face murder and other charges in connection with the deaths.

Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi is seeking the death penalty against Turner.

Police said they believe the killings happened as Turner and Stewart robbed the home, allegedly acting on a false rumor that they would find large amounts of cash and cocaine there.

The seven who were killed were: Alberto Covarrubias, 56; Emma Valdez, 46; her sons David Covarrubias, 8, Alberto Covarrubias, 11, and Magno Albarran, 29; her daughter, Flora Albarran; and Flora Albarran's son, Luis Albarran, 5.
