Severe Storms Leave Damage
Lightning Strike Sends Six To Hospital

Storms packing strong winds, hail and heavy rain left power outages, building damage and flooding concerns in parts of Indiana on Thursday.In northwestern Indianapolis, six firefighting trainees were shocked by lightning as they were taking part in a training session. Pike Township Deputy Fire Chief Martin Wilkey said trainees saw the storm approaching. "They were in the process of the wrapping the training up," Wilkey said. "It was apparently the first strike of that storm."

None of the shocked trainees appeared seriously injured, but Wilkey said they all were taken to hospitals for evaluations.As storms hit Indiana's northern half on Thursdsay afternoon, about six tractor-trailers were blown over on Interstate 69 in northeastern Grant County, officials told 6News. Because of the ensuing traffic mess, a representative at the Redkey state police post described the highway between mile markers 66 and 70 as a "war zone."In Marion, the Grant County courthouse closed after a storm blew off a large metal piece of its roof, 6News' Dan Spehler reported. Power lines also were reported down in the city.Indiana Michigan Power said more than 34,000 customers in northern and central Indiana, including more than 21,000 in the Marion area, lost power because of storms Thursday afternoon. As of 8 a.m. Friday, nearly 14,500 Hoosiers were still without power, with 12,000 of those in Marion.In southeastern Cass County, emergency management personnel reported damage to about a dozen homes. Some of the homes had trees blown into them and others had structural damage. Extensive power outages were also reported, with power poles and lines downed.Police reported that trees and power lines were downed both north and south of Kokomo.State police reported that wind uprooted a sign and threw it into a trooper's window, busting the window near Bunker Hill in Miami County.Emergency management officials in Cass County reported that several large trees had been downed in the Galveston area. An estimated wind gust of 70 mph went through Delphi in Carroll County. Trees were also downed about 12 miles northwest of Tipton in Tipton County.Police reported several downed trees near Monticello in White County. The evening wave of storms had wind gusts of nearly 60 mph as it moved through the Vincennes area, where many trees and power lines were blown down.
