Men Sentenced For Making, Selling False Documents

POSTED: 8:43 am EDT July 6, 2006

Two Columbus men were sentenced in federal court Wednesday after pleading guilty to taking part in a scheme to manufacture and sell false identification documents.

Dorillian Lopez Mendez, 27, was sentenced to 48 months in prison for possession of equipment intended to be used in the production of the documents.

His brother, Alonso Lopez Mendez, 34, received an 11-month sentence for false representation of a Social Security number.

Three federal agencies joined the Seymour and Columbus police departments in the investigation that led to the convictions.

Federal officials said an informant bought false ID documents in Columbus in 2005. The documents included fraudulent Social Security and resident alien cards.

Police said they found more than 350 fake documents in a raid of a mobile home in Columbus.

Federal officials said the Mendez brothers have been living in the U.S. illegally. Both face deportation hearings upon release from prison.
