Prosecutor: Parks Employee Took $350K From City

POSTED: 3:00 pm EDT July 18, 2006

An Indianapolis Parks and Recreation employee is accused of diverting $350,000 from city accounts into her own personal accounts.

City Attorney Kobi Wright said Kenya Miles, a parks accounting technician, is charged with official misconduct, theft and fraud against a financial institution.

Officials said an investigation began July 7, when Chase Bank alerted the city to unusual activity on a parks merchant account.

National City Bank also had dialogue with investigators and said that Miles had some communication with bank employees that made them suspicious of her activities.

Miles was arrested on Thursday and cooperated with the investigation, according to city officials.

Miles was fired after the Marion County Prosecutor's Office said she admitted to stealing the money. She had worked with the parks office since 1999.

Officials said Miles told them she had been taking the money since January 2000.
