Investigators have found no evidence that a gunman shot at a vehicle in Hammond -- a report that came two days after a fatal shooting on I-65 in southern Indiana and other shootings on I-69 in east-central Indiana -- Indiana State Police said.A man told police Tuesday morning that he was driving east on 169th Avenue in Hammond when he crossed Cline Avenue and saw a man appear from a grassy area in a trench coat. The motorist told police that the man produced a long gun from under his coat and shot at him in his truck, missing him, Chicago television station WMAQ reported.Police initially said they were investigating whether the incident was related to a series of sniper shootings that happened on Indiana highways over the weekend. However, investigators found no evidence that a shooting had happened in the Hammond case, state police said.
The fear of sniper attacks was evident on central Indiana's highways Tuesday. Police on Indianapolis' east side responded to at least two calls of possible shootings that day, but both reports were discounted. In one of the reports, a woman told police her windshield broke as she traveled on I-465. Officials told 6News they believe the damage was caused by debris from the roadway, not a bullet. The other report also turned out not to be a sniper incident, authorities said.
