Power Companies Ask Hoosiers To Conserve Energy

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Power and Light and Duke Energy are asking customers to voluntarily reduce energy consumption as Indiana bakes in the heat wave that has enveloped much of the U.S.The Midwest Independent System Operator, of which both IPL and Duke are members, declared "Emergency Alert 2" for the utilities on Tuesday. Electricity consumption is at near-record levels.MISO said high temperatures, peak energy usage and the availability of electricity prompted the move.
Customers are being asked to raise the thermostat on air conditioners and to use fans whenever possible. MISO also wants customers to avoid using dishwashers and doing laundry until evening hours.MISO also asked that customers close curtains, drapes and blinds during the day and to avoid cooking during the heat of the day.IPL and Duke said they stand a better chance at providing uninterrupted power to Hoosiers if the above steps are followed.
