Should BMV Be Taken From Governor's Oversight?

House Democratic leader Pat Bauer said Monday that he wants to take the Bureau of Motor Vehicles away from the governor's office.

Bauer has previously called upon Gov. Mitch Daniels to fire BMV commissioner Joel Silverman because of the agency's computer breakdown.

Bauer said he plans to introduce a bill to put the BMV under the direction of the Secretary of State, 6News' Norman Cox reported.

Bauer said that since the license branches also register voters, it would be a good fit and would allow voters to hold someone responsible for the agency's problems.

"Perhaps he's kept Mr. Silverman there this long so he continues to be the target and not the governor," Bauer said. "Maybe there's a method in this madness. What this does, it makes the debate alive for this fall.

Secretary of State Todd Rokita called Bauer's proposal an election-year antic.
