Third Baby Dies After Hospital Overdose

INDIANAPOLIS -- A third premature baby has died after being given an overdose of an anti-clotting drug at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

A spokesman for the hospital said the baby, Thursday Dawn Jeffers, had been transferred to Riley Hospital For Children and was in critical condition since receiving the overdose on Saturday. Jeffers died late Tuesday night.

"We are all saddened by this news and our hearts are with this family, and all the families who have been affected," Clarian Health spokesman Jon Mills said in a statement released early Wednesday. "We will continue to offer all of the support and assistance that we can."

Two premature newborns, D'myia Nelson and Emmery Miller, died on Saturday and three others remain hospitalized. Methodist Hospital officials said the three are no longer showing effects from the overdose.

The infants received adult doses of heparin -- a drug often used to prevent blood clots that could clog intravenous drug tubes.

Methodist Hospital is offering financial compensation to the families of the infants who died.

Hospital president and CEO Sam Odle said the hospital is offering to pay for the funerals of two babies who died, as well as counseling for the families.
