A man was hospitalized Wednesday morning after he was shot by a Marion County sheriff's deputy at a shopping center.

The officer was sent to a strip mall off 86th Street near a Target store after a woman called and said that a man pointed a handgun at her, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

Investigators said the man, Greg Tribby, 51, was found in the Southern Exposure tanning salon in the strip mall at about 8 p.m. The officer said he found Tribby holding a woman at gunpoint inside the salon. The officer fired at Tribby when he wouldn't drop his weapon, police said.

Marion County sheriff's Capt. Phil Burton said the tanning salon was open at the time of the incident and that two customers were inside. No one else was injured.

Tribby was taken to Wishard Hospital. Information about his condition was not immediately available, but his injuries were not believed to be life threatening.

The incident remains under investigation.
