Girl Leaves Hospital 4 Months After Pit Bull Attack

POSTED: 4:10 pm EDT September 26, 2006

A girl who was mauled by a pit bull four months ago has been released from Riley Hospital for Children, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Amaya Hess had been hospitalized since May 26, when, according to police, a pit bull attacked her in the front yard of a home in the 1300 block of South Belmont Avenue.

Hospital records indicate Hess was released on Monday, the spokeswoman said.

Hess, who was 2 when the attack happened, suffered damaged eyes, other head injuries and a collapsed lung. Animal control officers confiscated the dog, which was later euthanized.

Prosecutors decided not to file criminal charges against the dog's owner, who was a relative of a person whom Hess and her mother were visiting when the attack happened.
