Ball State University will soon be the home of the largest planetarium in the state.

The proposed new Ball State University Planetarium will feature a 52-foot diameter dome and will be an addition to the Cooper Science Complex.

Ball State President Jo Ann Gora said the planetarium will be an asset to students and the community.

"This is an exciting addition to Ball State's vibrant campus and will be a tremendous asset to students as well as the community and region," Gora said.

Construction of the $4.6 million facility will be funded through private gifts, including a $2.2 million donation from Indianapolis businessman and 1971 Ball State alumnus Charlie Brown.

"We are indebted to Charlie for his generosity and enthusiasm for this new facility. It is certain to prove to be another distinguishing feature of a campus known for innovation and immersive learning,” Gora said.

The new planetarium is expected to open in 2014.
