A 4-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero for helping his family escape a burning home Friday morning.

Firefighters were called to a house in the 3900 block of Spann Avenue, on the city's east side, at about 2:45 a.m.

Investigators said Tyler Morefield woke up when he heard a smoke detector go off. The boy ran into his parents' bedroom and woke them up, getting everyone out before they could be overcome by smoke.

"Larry and Angie Morefield say that Tyler learned all about fire safety at his preschool, Harmony Christian, and has had to call 911 before," Indianapolis fire Capt. Rita Burris said.

"I probably wouldn't have heard the smoke alarm," Larry Morefield said. "He got us up, and we all got out."

Investigators said the fire was electrical in nature and began in the basement of the home.

Damage to the home was estimated at $40,000.
