KOKOMO, Ind. -- There's no indication a Howard County sheriff's employee took the $1,700 missing from the night Deputy Carl Koontz was killed, Sheriff Steve Rogers said Tuesday.
The 27-year-old deputy was shot and killed March 20 while helping another officer, Sgt. Jordan Buckley, serve a warrant at the home of 25-year-old Evan Dorsey on Chandler Street.
Police believe Dorsey opened fire on the officers when they approached his door. He eventually turned the gun on himself.

Among the many items recovered as evidence from that night was $1,700 in cash in Koontz's patrol car. The money was seized during a traffic stop earlier in the evening where drug paraphernalia was discovered.
The money was documented, counted and retained by Koontz during the initial investigation, before entering the house on Chandler Street.
Days after the shooting, investigators realized the money was not in the evidence system and opened an investigation on March 30.
Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers said Koontz's vehicle was unattended for a short time at the scene of the shooting. The next day, it was moved to the flag pole area at the Howard County Criminal Justice Center for display.
