INDIANAPOLIS -- A 6-year-old was recovering Monday after being mauled by a pit bull on the northwest side of Indianapolis.

The boy's father says he was playing with friends in the neighborhood when the attack happened.

"My oldest son came running in here, he was out of breath and looked like he was shocked," Kenneth Gamble said. "When he finally calmed down and got the words out he said 'dog,' and that's when I sprinted out of the house."

Gamble tried to find his other son, who had been playing with friends a few houses down.

"I see this big guy come out of the back yard with my son in his hands, and he has blood everywhere," Gamble said.

Gamble and his fiancée rushed 6-year-old Kaiden Harrison to the hospital, where he was taken into surgery and is now recovering. It's not clear when he'll be able to come home.

"I'm thankful that my son, you know, survived the attack," Gamble said.

Indianapolis Animal Care and Control was investigating the attack. The dog, a pit bull/lab mix, was voluntarily surrendered to officers on Monday. The dog will undergo a 10-day quarantine before being euthanized.

According to insurer State Farm, Indiana ranks No. 13 when it comes to most reported dog bites. In 2014, State Farm paid out more than $2.9 million in dog bite claims.

Children make up more than 50 percent of all dog-related injury victims.
