INDIANAPOLIS -- We've heard about credit card skimmers at gas stations, and even ATMs, but now we are hearing about them in a place that you can't avoid using them.

Call 6 Investigates received a tip that someone had their credit card number stolen after inserting their card into a parking meter machine on Mass Ave.

"When we first became aware of this report, we immediately sent out our parking crew to check every one of the meters around the reported area," Park Indy said.

Park Indy said that as of Tuesday evening, they did not find any foreign devices. The company says it is the first time they have heard a report and are still investigating.

On Wednesday, Park Indy released this statement:

All reports of potentially fraudulent activity associated with parking pay stations, including reports of skimming, are escalated immediately. We are still working to validate this report, and we've engaged the authorities and will support their investigation. We examined all of the most used pay stations downtown, in Broad Ripple, and on Mass Ave. We were unable to locate any skimming devices at the present time.

Park Indy says its team is trained to visually inspect parking meters for skimmers and that pay stations are designed to make skimming difficult,.

To reduce your risk, Park Indy suggests that people use the Parkmobile app to pay via their phone. The app will also the process faster and easier because the account is set up ahead of time.

To avoid becoming a victim, experts suggest using a credit card to pay, that way if your number does get stolen, it does not tie up the money in your bank account. Experts also say to check your bank statements and to call your bank right away if you start to notice something.
