SHELBY COUNTY -- A former employee of the Timbergate Golf Course is serving more than a year on home detention after admitting to stealing thousands of dollars in taxpayer funds.

According to an audit released Wednesday by the Indiana State Board of Accounts, Ethan Duke worked at the Timbergate Golf Course Pro Shop.

The Timbergate Golf course is a public golf course operated by the Town of Edinburgh.

The golf course manager Wayne Gibbs noticed that collections from the pro shop and snack bar were short, and confronted Duke, according to the audit.

“Duke submitted a signed confession to Gibbs stating that he estimated he had stolen $4,000 from the golf course between April 18, 2015 and May 30, 2015 by not ringing up cash sales in the cash register,” read the audit. “Duke also stated he would pay the Town back in full by paying $250 per week.”

Duke was arrested on June 4, 2015 and on January 25, 2016 pled guilty to theft, and was ordered to pay $4,000 in restitution to the town of Edinburgh taxpayers.

He was sentenced to 511 days on home detention.

Call 6 Investigates was unable to reach Duke’s public defender for comment Wednesday.

According to the audit released Wednesday, the town of Edinburg has not yet received any payments from Duke.
