INDIANAPOLIS -- An annual inspection of Indianapolis Public Schools' bus fleet began this week – and it's already turned up some concerning results.

The test is critical for IPS. Last year, only 50 percent of the district's buses passed the initial inspection. The state average is 83 percent.

Police began the inspections Monday at John Marshall High School.

Early reports show that of 40 buses inspected, only seven were approved.

At least 22 required minor repairs, and six were put out of service entirely.

Police will spend the next several days checking 199 buses.

The district is expecting a new shipment of buses in July to replace older vehicles.
