INDIANAPOLIS -- Call 6 Investigates has learned that man shot dead by police after attacking an officer had a warrant for his arrest.

According to Call 6 sources, Kevin Hicks was fighting with his wife Heather at the Marathon Gas Station at 10th and Rural on the city’s east side Tuesday night and 911 was called. Sources say Hicks attacked a responding IMPD officer.

Sources also say the officer is suffering from a concussion after a blow to the head and had his hand broken in the attack.

IMPD officials on the scene Tuesday night say the officer, fearing for his life, fired a single shot and killed Hicks.

Court records obtained by Call 6 Investigates show that Hicks was serving in Marion County’s work release program at the Duvall Center. Sources tell Call 6 Investigates that Hicks never returned Tuesday evening and a warrant was issued.

Hicks is no stranger to law enforcement, according to documents uncovered by Call 6 Investigates.

Hicks has served time in prison for multiple Indiana cases dating back to 1990, according to Department of Corrections records. His sentences include auto theft, trespassing, residential entry, theft, robbery and multiple battery charges.

Hicks was released on parole from the state’s Department of Corrections on February 26.

IMPD officials are expected to release more details on the case and talk to RTV6 later in the day.
