INDIANAPOLIS -- The prime suspect in the killing of a Zionsville mother and her son served on the board of the Humane Society of Indianapolis during a 2002 financial controversy.
Lucius Oliver Hamilton III stepped in when former director Marsha Spring was accused of using credit cards for personal use, sources say.
“He was the interim director when Marsha Spring was released,” said Warren Patitz, a longtime animal welfare advocate. “They didn’t have anybody there to take charge, sign checks, so he would come in periodically to come in, sign checks and that kind of business.”
During a 2002 interview, Hamilton spoke about Spring’s resignation.

“Every action that’s been taken here has been appropriate and above board,” Hamilton told RTV6. “I don’t think (the resignation) had anything to do with credit cards.”
Patitz said, at the time, the animal welfare community was concerned about the Humane Society’s treasury.
“What I remember from his time there with regards to money, Hamilton was very protective of the money that was missing and had gone on record as saying denying there was any wrongdoing,” said Patitz.
