Car Hits, Kills Boy On Scooter

A car fatally struck a 5-year-old boy riding a scooter on a street just outside his Avon-area home Thursday afternoon, the Hendricks County Sheriff's Department said.

The child, Bryce A. Bear, had just finished visiting a neighbor with his father. He was on an electric scooter, crossing Thistle Court to get home, when the car hit him at about 3:20 p.m., authorities said.

Police said Bear was wearing a helmet when he was struck. He was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the car's driver, a 16-year-old boy, might have had his view obstructed by a trailer that was parked on the street, located just north of Avon.

No charges or citations were filed in the incident Thursday afternoon, but the case is still under investigation.

"All I can tell everyone is just to try to keep an eye out and pay the best attention that you can," said Hendricks County sheriff's Capt. Brett Clark.
