Firefighters battled a two-alarm house fire in Carmel early Tuesday.

Just before 3:30 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a home in the 12000 block of Shelbourne Road on reports of a structure fire.

When crews arrived, Carmel Fire Marshal Bruce Knott said they saw flames shooting through the roof of an isolated, two-story home.

"The house sits on a long, private drive. There was also a locked gate and we had to break through that to get (to the house). Firefighters noticed the concentration and the smoke and we were finally able to figure out where the fire was coming from,” Knott said.

No injuries were immediately reported, but officials said several other fire agencies, including the Indianapolis Fire Department, Zionsville and Westfield, were called to the scene to assist.

An elderly couple owns the home, but they were not home at the time of the fire, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
