INDIANAPOLIS -- A child's leg was amputated after she was struck by a train on the city’s west side Monday afternoon.

Wayne Township Fire Department PIO Michael Pruitt said the incident involving a CSK freight train took place in between Lynhurst and Holt Roads, near Garden City Elementary School around 2:50 p.m.

Pruitt said it is not clear if the 11-year-old girl was a student at the nearby school, but she does fit the age group. Emergency crews said they aren't sure how the incident happened, but an adult family member was present during the time.

Fire crews said the area was "remote" and hard to access. Medics had to cross through a creek bed full of water and up steep terrain to access the area.

She was transported to Riley Children’s Hospital in critical condition and was communicating with responders while on scene, officials with Wayne Township Fire said.

No further information was released.
