James Holmes showed little emotion during his initial hearing Monday in the shooting rampage at a Colorado movie theater that killed 12 people and injured 58 others.
The 24-year-old, who had bright reddish orange hair and was wearing a red jumpsuit, was seated in the jury box and looked down for much of the hearing.

Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers confirmed that the charges on which the court found probable cause included first-degree murder.
Authorities said the former graduate student is refusing to cooperate and it could take months to learn what prompted the horrific attack on moviegoers at a midnight screening of the latest Batman film.
Investigators said they found a Batman mask inside Holmes' booby-trapped apartment after the attack.
Holmes has been held in solitary confinement since Friday. Chambers declined to comment on whether Holmes was under the influence of medication during the hearing.
Prosecutors said they may consider the death penalty but will make that decision after consulting with victim's families. The decision must be made within 60 days of arraignment.
Holmes left the courtroom in handcuffs after the brief hearing.
He will learn what formal charges he will face during his arraignment July 30 at 9:30 a.m.
