ANDERSON, Ind. – A woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison Monday afternoon after her niece was found severely malnourished.

Crystal Sells was found guilty on six counts of neglect after her 15-year-old mentally disabled niece was discovered to be severely malnourished and weighing only 40 pounds when she was taken to the hospital on Dec. 1, 2014.

Police said the teen’s bones were protruding from her body.

Investigators believe the 15-year-old may have been locked in her room for several years as she had not seen a doctor or attended school since 2012.

Sells is the third person sentenced in the case.

The teen’s grandparents, Steve and Joetta Sells, were both sentenced to 24 years in prison.
