GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A Center Grove house was burglarized and ransacked Saturday evening.

Police were called to a house in the 5700 block of Columbia Circle, near the intersection of SR 37 and Smith Valley Road.

The home’s sliding glass door was broken and the gate had been open. Police reports showed the suspect got into the home through the back door and got away with jewelry.

Officers aren’t sure if the family’s home was targeted for a specific reason or if the break-in was random, but officials with the Greenwood Police Department said they will continue to investigate as a suspect has not been arrested.

Many families in the area are in the middle of their spring break, a time when break-ins can spike. Those that live in the community said the neighborhood doesn’t experience much crime, but after Saturday’s incident, they are on high alert.

"We have checked our alarm system and found out one of them was not working from our alarm company, so we'll just get that up to date,” one neighbor said.

Others in the area said they have purchased motion detector lights for their yards.

Johnson County Sheriff Doug Cox recommends several tips to keep your home safe while you are away:

  • Stay off social media before leaving for vacation and during the time you’re away
  • Leave a light on inside your home – use a timer if possible
  • Forward any mail or newspaper deliveries while you’re away
  • Alarm your property
  • Ask the police department that services your home to provide a vacation check while you are away
  • When you ask a neighbor to watch your house, make sure they are a trusty neighbor who knows how to keep quiet about your absence.
