INDIANAPOLIS – Car break-ins happen several times a day in Marion County, but crime data reports show about an average of 16 vehicles are stolen per day, with one particular day of the week being most popular for thieves.

Marion County crime data reveals more vehicles are reported stolen on Thursdays and less are reported stolen on Sundays.

“If you see something, you need to say something,” said Indianapolis police officer Aaron Hamer. “I think it’s invaluable if we can look out for our neighbors.”

Officers said it doesn’t take long for a theft to occur. To prevent these incidents, Indianapolis police suggest the following tips:

  • Don’t leave your vehicle running and unattended
  • Purchase a club for your steering wheel
  • Park in a well-lit area if you aren’t able to park inside a garage
