BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The man convicted of murdering Indiana University student Hannah Wilson in 2015 faces new charges, according to the IU Police Department.
Daniel Messel was charged this week with rape, criminal confinement, criminal deviate conduct, battery and theft in connection to the 2012 attack on an IU student.
Police say that attack occurred in the early morning hours of Sept. 1, 2012.
According to court documents, the 22-year-old victim came into contact with Messel, who then forced her into a secluded parking lot and into a vehicle. She was then driven to Griffy Lake, where she was allegedly beaten and sexually assaulted.
The student managed to walk to a nearby home to ask for help and was transported to a hospital.
IU police recovered evidence from the scene and found the DNA matched Messel's.
Messel was sentenced to 80 years in prison in mid-September for Wilson's murder.

Wilson’s body was found in a wooded area of Brown County in 2015 with Messel's cellphone lying nearby. Investigators found her blood, hair and DNA in Messel's 2012 Kia SUV.
A coroner later determined Wilson died of blunt force trauma to the head.
