INDIANAPOLIS -- A Ben Davis High School student is fighting for his life after being shot on the city's west side on Friday.

Juan Romera Sanchez,16, was shot and wounded while playing soccer with his younger nephew in a field. Police believe the shooting may have been related to a pair of shoes.

Family and friends have been staked outside Sanchez's room, praying for his recovery.

Gilbert Benitez, along with several other friends have made time to stop by.

"School is very important, but you can make up those days. But you can't go back in time and say i wish I was with Juan at these moments. It wouldn't be right. I couldn't go to school today," said Benitez.

Police are still looking for the two men they believe were involved in the shooting.

And Sanchez's aunt said the family wants justice for Juan.

"He is a very kind son, a very kind nephew, a very kind friend. We don't know what would make someone shoot him the way they did," said Ana Sanchez.

Juan has already had a number of blood transfusions and his friends say they are planning to donate blood at the Central Indiana Blood Bank, anything they can do to help Sanchez's fight to live.

"If he pulls through he is gonna keep motivating us. This will be a constant reminder that Juan can do it, we can do it," said Edgar Estrella.

counselors have been made available at Ben Davis High School for students who are having difficulty dealing with what happened. School administrators have also been at the school to help support Sanchez's family during this difficult time.
