INDIANAPOLIS – The family of a woman who was killed in a robbery last weekend on Indy’s south side desperately hopes police find those responsible.

Military veteran Erin Mills, 34, was killed outside of her apartment Sunday morning in the 7200 block of Creekbrook Drive in the Southport Crossing apartment complex. Indianapolis police said she was unloading her car after arriving home from a trip when an armed man approached her.

Officers found Mills lying on the ground with at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her brother Christopher Mills said he was heartbroken to learn his younger sister had been killed.

“She's my little sister. She had a love of life, love for friends, very intelligent,” said Christopher. “We have no idea what the conversation was between my sister and this person.”

Mills’ fiancé was found inside the apartment with at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Christopher said his sister recently started a new job as a teacher.

“It's her heart, teaching kids, being around them and helping them grow. Inspiring them to be something better,” he said.

Police said this was the second deadly shooting in the area in less than six weeks.

Dozens of roses have been left at Mills’ apartment door in her memory. Her family left a note on the door thanking the community for their support.

“Just please come forward, with any information anything possible,” said Christopher.
